چکیده

The ALICE experiment is devoted to the study of heavy-ion collisions at the CERN LHC collider. We present the results of a feasibility study for the detection of D → Kπ decays in Pb–Pb collisions with ALICE. 1 Physics motivation The aim of the ALICE [1] experiment is to study the behaviour of nuclear matter in the conditions of high densities and temperatures in which a transition to a deconfined QCD phase (Quark Gluon Plasma) is expected. The study of open charm production is of primary interest for two main reasons: • the interaction of the produced charm quarks with the plasma may reduce their momenta because of elastic collisions and in-medium gluon emissions (see e.g. Ref. [2] and references therein); • secondary parton scattering in the high-density partonic system produced may provide an additional source of charm quarks [3]. The measurement of the total charm production cross section and of the transverse momentum distribution of charm quarks in Pb–Pb collisions, as well as in pp and in pA interactions, is essential to study these open issues. The exclusive reconstruction of D mesons in the hadronic decay channel (D → Kπ, branching ratio = 3.83%) will provide a direct measurement of charm kinematical distributions.

Charm quenching in heavy-ion collisions at the LHC

D-meson suppression in Pb–Pb collisions at the LHC due to charm quark in-medium energy loss is estimated within a model that describes the available quenching measurements at RHIC. The result is compared to that previously published by the author. The expected sensitivity of the ALICE experiment for studying charm energy loss via fully-reconstructed D-meson decays is also presented. PACS number...

Measurement of D-meson production in Pb—Pb collisions at the LHC with ALICE

The measurement of D-meson production in heavy-ion collisions at LHC energy provides insights into the mechanisms of interaction of charm quarks in the hot and dense medium formed in these collisions. ALICE results on the D-meson nuclear modification factor and azimuthal anisotropy in Pb–Pb collisions at √ sNN = 2.76 TeV are presented.

Measurement of W-boson production in p–Pb collisions at = 5.02 TeV with ALICE at the LHC

In hadronic collisions, electroweak bosons are produced in initial hard scattering processes and they are not affected by the strong interaction. In proton–proton collisions, they have been suggested as standard candles for luminosity monitoring and their measurement can improve the evaluation of detector performances. In nucleus-nucleus and proton–nucleus collisions, W-bosons allow one to chec...
